This Week in LGBT: Why boycotts don’t do anything

Joaquin Tenedora-Forte

April 19, 2016

This month North Carolina overwhelmingly passed a bill that prevents any city from passing a law that protects LGBT people, Transgender people are the most affected the law, and that they are being ban from going to their of bathroom of preferred gender. The gay community is obviously very outrage and sadden by this backwards bill.

There has been a lot of backlash, boycotts had been called. People had been very angry and mad. Ringo Starr and Bruce Springsteen had said that they are boycotting, they are are not going to play in North Carolina. Boycotts are a waste of time, I sed to love boycotts but after I listen to Academy award winner screenwriter Dustin Lance Black give a speech I change my mind.

Do not get me wrong what happen in North Carolina really is a set back for the transgender community. And we should support ever effort to repel that amendment. Boycotting will just make it worse. because it shows the people who do not want equality that the gay community and its supporters are authoritarians. And that the gay community wants to ban their religion and it is not good.

The gay community need to accept that the fact this is the law of the land in North Carolina. What we should do is we should do what the fight for marriage equality is very successful in doing. They gay community should fill a law suit and battle it out in the court and may the best argument wins. I know for a fact we will win. because this strategist worked.

The problem after the US has gotten marriage the gay groups become lazy. As if they do not want to finish the job that they started interns of the Non Discrimination laws and The Transgender Bathroom Bill. We should finish what we started.

The LGBT community should wake up because people are still suffering in many parts of the US. Finally I want to literate that marriage is not the end of all the problems. The gay community needs to be able to fix themselves.

Personal essay: Why I am not religious

Joaquin Tenedora-Forte

 January 11, 2016

I was born into, and grow up in a moderately religious Catholic household, religion is so much a part of my life. I was confirm. But my mom who is a college professor is open minded enough, that when I told her that I do not want to go to church unless it’s Christmas Eve or Easter, she said no problem. Here are three reasons why I am not religious.

  1. It is not factual: There is a reason why religion is not science, it is just faith. Scientists do not just say things, for example, the theory of evolution; we came from apes. They need to study it, for multiple years or even decades just to say it. In religion they can just say it and then people will believe it, like Adam and Eve.
  2. The Catholic Church child molestation cases: this is really bad, the Catholic Church hid it from plain sight. Pope Benedict XVI never acknowledged that this is happening in the Church, however the current pope, Pope Francis, had apologized to the victims it did not change my thoughts on the matter. Because of their doctrine of abstinence only for their priest, because that is what they believe Jesus is, a virgin. Sex is a part of the human condition.
  3. I am a liberal: all though I know that a lot of liberals are Christian. What I believe in does not jive with what the church think about for example marriage. I believe that if you love each other you can should be able to get married. I know that the Catholic Church will never allow marriage equality.

Lastly, I want to clear something up, I am not an atheist, I still believe in god, I still pray to God. I do not want to hear some incorrect information. finally. Where do you get your morals from, simple answer the golden rule: Do not do to others as you do not like others to do to you. It just makes perfect sense.

What is like being a liberal in a conservative part of the world

Joaquin Tenedora-Forte
What you don’t know about me is I am big liberal. It is really hard for me to see Conservatives as good people I see them as bad people. I need to remind my see that I am living in the Philippines (one of the most conservative places in the world) it sometimes hard.

I am a big secular humanist, so I often believe in human rights. As a person who is in the part of the neurodiverse community and who is sometimes look down upon. You need a lot of empathy. The game of “what If” is being played every time and it’s been likewise very rewarding.

I really believe that gay people have a right to get married, Undocumented people in America and all around the world shouldn’t be called illegal aliens, I hate the term because its very inaccurate and wrong and woman had a right to there bodies until a curtain point. But what I still believe in a limited government involvement.

It sometimes feels like I am so out of place in my own country. I love the Philippines but I still can’t believe that the country has gotten to far in terms of its social operation of minority gropes, in a poll done by Rapper News 68% of Filipinos thinks that homosexuality is immoral. What the heck. You can help being gay or transgender and it’s not a choice that they had made from them selves. It’s hard wired in them, as if they choose, one day OMG I want guys, or I am a guy OMG I am a girl instead no that’s not how it goes.

One thing that saddens me everyday is how society thinks of divorce, divorce is one touchy subject in this country as If it prevents people from separating duh you are just preventing some one from getting married duh. People are in the wrong side of history in this country. I know that we should value conservatism but valuing conservatism doesn’t mean that we should infringe on other people’s lives.

Lastly, I know that Filipinos are so religious, please don’t use the bible as a way to hate use it as a why to understand why other people think or act the why that the they do. Putting your foot on other people’s shoes. And be Christ like. Jesus Christ understands, loves, cares.
